Possessing finely honed aural skills are an essential part of being a musician, and yet many teachers report that they find it difficult to know how to impart these skills to their students.

In this First Thursday, Dr Brett McKern will talk to teachers on how to develop aural skills in the private music studio. He will emphasize the importance of incorporating a regular aural practice in each lesson and show how you can train aural skills as part of the activities that are already taking place in the music lesson rather than as a separate entity. Teaching in this way can help reduce the stigma for those students who find aural skills difficult or off-putting and, importantly, ensure these fundamental skills are developed in all your students.

First Thursdays

These regular professional development sessions were originally the brainchild of MTA Member Annette Allerding, who wanted music teachers to be able to meet and share ideas. Originally named Keys, Cakes and Conversation (KCC) the group went online during Covid, and eventually reached numbers often in excess of 50 teachers, meeting each month on Zoom.

The Music Teachers' Association of NSW is delighted to bring these sessions into our fold. We want the sessions to continue to be free to our members, but we also believe it is important to pay presenters for their valuable time. So we ask you to consider a giving a donation towards the costs if you are able. You will be given the option to donate when you book your place.
