Joy Lalchere gained degrees in piano performance and teaching from the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music and the Sydney Teachers' College. She then spent several years with the New South Wales Department of Education as a specialist music teacher in secondary schools.

As well as having accreditation as a private teacher of piano, musicianship and theory, Joy is a member of the Accompanists' Guild of NSW.

On a lighter note, she played with a local big band and regularly plays harpsichord in her own baroque instrumental ensemble.
