Advanced Student Concert and the inaugural MTA Advanced Performer Award

MTA NSW is proud to announce Sun Yi, Associate Concertmaster Emeretus of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will adjudicate the 2024 Advanced Concert and Scholarship Award. This concert is for advanced students (Grade 7 and above) aged 25 and under. Performers will perform one to two whole works. Please follow the links below for the full Terms and Conditions.

Grades 7, 8 and Certificate will perform from 215pm.

Associate and Licentiate Level performances will take place from 345pm.

Each performer will receive an adjudicator's report and places will be awarded according to the grade and level of accomplishment. Highly commended may also be awarded to students. 

Music Teachers' Association of NSW Advanced Performer Award

The Board of the Music Teachers’ Association is proud to announce the creation of a new annual scholarship for advanced students of MTA members. The Scholarship has been established from the Music Teachers Association Benevolent Fund. 

The purpose of the scholarship is to enable successful students to study in Australia or abroad. 

  • All instrument types and voices are eligible for entry. 
  • Performers must be aged 25 years or under, be residents of NSW, and be students of teachers who are MTA members. 

First, second and third place trophies will be awarded in both categories. In addition, two scholarships totally $1,750 will be awarded to the most outstanding students from the day.

Rural and Regional Entries

For students outside the Sydney, Blue Mountains, Newcastle, Central Coast, and Illawarra local government areas, regional entries will be accepted, via video, with the video played live and judged on the day. The video must be a one take performance of the entire program, with no editing, cuts or post production enhancement. Videos should be sent to the office via www.wetransfer.com. About the Adjudicator

Sun Yi was born in Hunan, China. From 2002 to 2007, Sun Yi held the position of Associate Concertmaster of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. He was appointed Associate Concertmaster with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2007 and has appeared as soloist with the orchestra in Saint-Saëns's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. He is also the founding member of the Whiteley Trio and Nexus-2MBS Virtuosi. In 2023, Sun Yi has been appointed Associate Concertmaster Emeritus with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Full Terms & Conditions are available here but some important ones include: 

  • Students are ineligible to participate in both categories. 
  • Students preparing for Associate Level examinations or higher must enter in the Associate-Licentiate Level. 
  • Teachers will be asked for evidence of their student’s previous examination results to confirm that they are eligible to participate in this award.
