2024 HSC Symposium

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC FACING EVENT AND THEREFORE AUDIENCE TICKETS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE.

The HSC Symposium is open to year 12 students taking Music 1, Music 2 or Music Extension who are about to sit their HSC examinations and for year 11 students and their teachers to observe.

9.30am - Part 1: HSC Guidelines, Syllabus Objectives, Bands 4-5-6

Participants will benefit from an initial open discussion on HSC Guidelines on how to prepare for the HSC, with a special focus on the practical components. There will be information on the difference between the marking criteria/methodology for Music 1 and Music 2/Extension students.

There will also be some basic information on HSC composition and musicology and electives

Part 2: Performances & Live Feedback

This will run like a masterclass with audience participation. Students will perform one to two pieces, totalling no longer than 10 minutes. HSC music marker, will engage the audience to elicit their feedback and he will also offer feedback against the syllabus objectives to the performers to enhance their performance.

Part 3: Core & Elective Composition

Students will hear from Composer, David Paterson, about how they might go about starting and structuring a composition for the HSC core and elective. You will hear advice from the composer about what a band 4, band 5 and band 6 composition look like and what needs to be considered when preparing this and the composition diary. Compositions included in the HSC resources and published Education Standards (NESA) will be reviewed as well as other successful compositions.

Part 4: Composition Masterclass

Students will be able to submit a recording and score of their composition. They can be complete or not. They must not be longer than 5 minutes for Core composition or two compositions for Extension with a total not longer than 6 minutes.

Rural/Remote Students will be able to submit a video which will be played live during the session and the student can join via Zoom to get feedback from the HSC marker. Videos should be uploaded as an unlisted YouTube or sent to the office via WeTransfer or DropBox. Rural/Remote Teachers are able to join the HSC Symposium via live streaming. The link will be sent with the event program.

Online Entries: in the event that the concert is sold out and your student misses out on a ticket, your student will still be able to submit as an online participant. These tickets will become available once the in-person tickets are sold out.
